Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero high challenge within the way of living down its very unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]

The fresh new film’s writer and movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess game, to have mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) did at the local casino and you may old a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). Whilst the plot pursue a familiar development, this new characterizations are new while the activities suitable to help you overbalance. It is mostly an issue of watching Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably if you’re a huge cast out of stars and you will stars offer your typical help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good nothing woman which brings out the best in your and you can Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen whom gets him for the jams. Thomas Gomez try fatty due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb does another ready tour because a weary police inspector whom eventually shuts the fact. A great amount of drinking and puffing is completed by the most of the concerned.” [ several ]
